	Background Malaria Alert Centre (MAC) was established by the College of Medicine in 2001 through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The centre was established to provide training in the knowledge, skills and advocacy needed for malaria prevention, management and control, and in methods that can be applied to malaria research, with emphasis on monitoring and evaluation of interventions. As a national resource, MAC has collaborated with national health programs and international partners to become a centre of excellence in operational research, developing capacities and strategies relevant to national health policy. As a result, MAC is now a recognized partner for the National Malaria Control Program in Malawi, and as a member of the National Malaria Advisory Committee (NMAC) and the task force overseeing the development and implementation of the malaria plan of action. MAC’s current activities are financially supported by interested malaria partners including resources from the Bill Gates Foundation, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), UNICEF, USAID, Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), University of Liverpool, Medical Council of South Africa and the Ministry of Health through sector wide approach project (SWAp). Mission Statement Using evidence based innovative strategies, MAC aims to contribute towards improved management and control of communicable diseases at all levels of community and health care systems, nationally and within the region. Goal Undertaking operation research, providing training and advocacy needed for disease prevention, management and control with emphasis on monitoring and evaluation of interventions. Strategic Objectives Contribute to evidence based policy implementation through research, training and dissemination of research results thereby enabling National Disease Control Programmes within the region to make informed policy decisions. Promote public awareness and recognition of major communicable diseases of public health significance nationally and in the SADC region. Impart knowledge and skills for proper diagnosis, treatment and prevention of communicable especially for the most vulnerable populations. Comprehensive Systematic Review Training All members of the Synthesis group, including the convenor, have completed the required Joanna Briggs Institute Comprehensive Systematic Review Training Program 17 September 2007, Cape Town, South Africa
